Preparing Children for the Future: Parenting in the Era of Artificial Intelligence

January 5, 2024

In the serene confines of my residence, cradling my six-month-old child tenderly, I peruse the latest updates on groundbreaking progressions in artificial intelligence and genetic modification. This moment triggers deep contemplation: what will the fabric of work and life resemble when he embarks on his professional journey two decades hence? The swift pace of technological advancement today renders the future akin to a far-off, uncharted realm.

Merely a few years back, the notion of ‘influencers’ as a viable career choice would have seemed outlandish and entertaining. Yet, here we stand, in an era where seasoned experts from various domains such as healthcare, business, and mental health are increasingly gravitating towards online platforms for crafting content. Individuals have discovered a way to blend their enthusiasm with lucrative content creation—an indication of the dynamic, continually evolving nature of our economy, sculpted by technological breakthroughs.

This transformation is spearheaded by the relentless progress in artificial intelligence. AI stands on the brink of transforming sectors like education and healthcare, potentially executing tasks with greater efficiency than humans. The influence of AI is palpable in the domain of content creation, where it is assuming an increasingly pivotal role. Furthermore, the very essence of human interaction is undergoing a metamorphosis, with sophisticated chatbots potentially assuming the role of companions, thereby reshaping the emotional landscape of society.

Yet, what implications does this hold for the infants of today, like my son, as they stride into the world of the 2040s? Will their daily routines encompass a conventional commute to work, or will they find themselves enveloped in technology-infused home environments? Will technology render their lives so convenient that they veer towards extreme lethargy? More significantly, how will they derive significance and satisfaction from their careers and lives in a world markedly distinct from ours?

In a realm characterized by rapid transitions, where change stands as the sole constant, the essence of human biology and psychology may remain largely unaltered. Despite strides in embedded technology and genetic editing, it is probable that the fundamental facets of human nature will endure. This continuity offers a glimmer of hope and a guiding beacon in navigating the uncertainties of the future.

In response to this swiftly evolving landscape, I reflect on the indispensable skills and values crucial for my son’s survival and prosperity. While these skills have perennially held significance—be it in the Stone Age, Industrial Age, or Information Age—they have assumed heightened importance in the Intelligence Age. Indian cricket maestro Rahul Dravid, following a gritty innings on a challenging pitch in England several years ago, was queried about his approach to scoring a century on a wicket posing difficulties for other players. His response was simple: he reverted to the basics. Similarly, rather than devising intricate strategies to navigate the unique challenges of the Intelligence Age, I advocate for a reiteration of the fundamental principles, albeit within the context of our contemporary era.

Foremost among these is critical thinking—the capacity to objectively scrutinize and assess situations based on foundational principles rather than merely embracing prevalent narratives. This skill will be pivotal in discerning truth in an environment inundated with information. Alongside this, proficiencies in coordination, negotiation, and collaboration retain their significance, as human interaction and consensus-building across diverse stakeholders remain irreplaceable, even with AI advancements.

Equally vital is the cultivation of a robust set of personal values. These values will serve as his moral compass, directing his decisions and actions. He must formulate his own hierarchy of values, delineating what holds utmost importance to him, whether it be fortitude, empathy, success, or integrity.

In a world of perpetual flux, the pivotal attributes of adaptability and flexibility will assume paramount importance. The ability to adeptly respond to change and alter one’s course will be indispensable skills in an uncertain milieu. Achieving this will necessitate a willingness to embrace humility, acknowledge feedback, and subsequently commit to self-improvement and the acquisition of requisite skills.

I also aspire to instill in him a sense of belief in something beyond himself. It is an intrinsic human inclination to connect with a sense of purpose and optimism. While faith remains a deeply personal choice, it is equally valuable to introduce the concept of spirituality to young children, as many of us possess an inherent inclination to seek a connection with the divine, particularly in challenging circumstances.

Moreover, I envision him developing a mindset characterized by resilience and accountability—a ‘warrior’ ethos rather than a ‘victim’ mentality. It pertains to assuming responsibility for one’s happiness and well-being, prioritizing both physical and mental health. Only through this can an individual effectively care for their family and make meaningful contributions to society.

Lastly, I desire for him to lead with an open heart, embracing the full spectrum of human emotions, from love to sorrow, from empathy to indignation. It is about mustering the courage to step beyond one’s comfort zone, embracing life in all its intricacies and splendor.

As a parent, I am cognizant of the enormity of this responsibility. I acknowledge that I cannot foresee the evolution of the world in the forthcoming decades, hence I opt to focus on facets within my sphere of influence. Imparting these skills and values to my son stands as my prime strategy in equipping him for a future that is uncertain yet brimming with possibilities—a future shaped by the relentless march of technology.
