Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll on Children’s Health, more than two-thirds of parents consider “overuse of devices [and] screen time” as their primary worry regarding their children.

Psychologist Claire Christensen from SRI International suggests that parents should go easy on themselves when permitting additional screen time for their kids. This flexibility can offer parents the opportunity to complete tasks or chores efficiently.

Christensen emphasizes that not all screen time is detrimental. Consuming high-quality, educational content can aid children in acquiring essential skills and fostering emotional intelligence, contributing to their future success.

Instead of reducing overall screen time, Christensen advises families to assess the purpose it serves and maintain a balance that works for them. However, transitioning children away from screen time can sometimes lead to emotional outbursts, especially when shifting to other activities like meals or bedtime.

To facilitate a smoother transition, Christensen recommends the following strategies:

Establish and Maintain Consistent Rules

While a complete ban on screen time may be excessive, having clear rules in place is crucial. Research indicates that children are less likely to develop problematic media habits when there are established guidelines. Creating a routine for media consumption helps in steering children towards high-quality content and enables them to switch off devices without distress.

Opt for Longer Content

Short-form videos can negatively impact attention spans by providing instant gratification. Encourage children to engage with longer content such as TV shows with 30-minute episodes to enhance their attention spans and reduce the desire for continuous short videos.

Avoid Giving a Two-Minute Warning

Instead of notifying children with a two-minute warning before ending screen time, focus on preparing for the next activity yourself. Offering engaging alternatives like setting up building blocks or suggesting a choice of beverage can facilitate a seamless transition.

Utilize Technology Limits

Leverage technology settings and apps to enforce screen time limits. By attributing the end of screen time to technology rather than the parent, children may respond more positively to transitioning away from screens.
