Harry and Meghan: Despite Best Parenting, Kids Still at Risk on Social Media

February 1, 2024

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have cautioned that even with “the best parenting in the world,” children are not entirely shielded from the perils of social media.

Expressing their concerns to prominent technology firms such as Meta, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter), the couple emphasized the necessity for immediate actions to safeguard the youth online, rather than evading accountability.

Following the testimonies of chief executives from various social media behemoths before the US Senate Judiciary Committee, where grieving parents recounted the tragic consequences of online harm on their children, Prince Harry and Meghan released a statement.

Known for their vocal stance against the inadequate approach of such corporations towards child safety, the Sussexes have been collaborating with families who have endured the loss of their children due to the negative impacts of social media.

In a declaration on their Archewell platform, the couple commended the courage and persistence of parents nationwide whose relentless advocacy led to the pivotal Senate hearing. They highlighted the imperative need for transformative changes in the digital realm to ensure the safety of children, transcending political divides and uniting in this common cause.

The Sussexes shared poignant words from a father they had engaged with, reflecting on the profound impact of online dangers: “If love could have saved them, all of our children would still be here.” They underscored the urgency for accountability and proactive measures to foster a secure online environment for the younger generation.

At the congressional hearing, Senator Lindsey Graham admonished Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg and his counterparts, attributing responsibility for the dire consequences of their platforms: “I know you don’t mean it to be so, but you have blood on your hands. You have a product that’s killing people.”

In a moment of acknowledgment, Zuckerberg directly addressed the grieving parents in attendance, expressing remorse for their harrowing ordeals.

The Sussexes’ statement was complemented by a video from the Archewell Foundation Parents’ Summit, where they engaged with families to address mental wellness challenges in the digital era, coinciding with World Mental Health Day.

Emphasizing the importance of collective healing and advocacy, Prince Harry highlighted the necessity of preventing similar tragedies and fostering a safer digital landscape. He advocated for enhanced transparency, awareness, and shareholder responsibility to prioritize safety over profits, thereby averting further anguish.

Meghan stressed the enduring presence of social media in the lives of children, emphasizing the need to address its impact, even as their own young children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, remain at a tender age of four and two.
