Celebrating Positive Parenting: County and State Designate January as a Month for Community Builders

February 3, 2024

Cope Family Center, a member of the Napa County Triple P Collaborative (NCTPC), has officially declared that both the Napa County Board of Supervisors and the California Assembly have acknowledged January as Positive Parenting Month. This recognition emphasizes the significance of parents and caregivers fostering warm, nurturing relationships with their children and adolescents while gaining confidence in their parenting abilities.

On January 9, the Napa County Board of Supervisors designated January 2024 as the 6th Annual Positive Parenting Awareness Month in Napa County. Chair Joelle Gallagher presented the proclamation to the NCTPC members present, expressing gratitude for the agencies’ dedication to supporting families in Napa County.

Subsequently, on January 22, the California Assembly approved ACR-120, marking the fifth consecutive year that January is recognized as Positive Parenting Awareness Month. Following this approval, members of the NCTPC, alongside 27 Triple P-Positive Parenting Program providers and administrators from across the state, traveled to Sacramento for a day of collective advocacy. During this visit, they engaged with state representatives to advocate for prioritizing positive parenting in both budget allocations and policy decisions, advocating for funding to support evidence-based programs like Triple P.

Since 2016, Triple P has been accessible to families throughout Napa County, offering classes at no cost. These sessions focus on imparting positive parenting techniques and strategies to help parents cultivate stronger bonds with their children and navigate challenging situations effectively. Participants in these classes have reported significant improvements in their children’s behavior, their own parenting approaches, and their overall stress levels.

Debra Wigington, Cope’s Parent Education Program Manager, emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the inherent stress of parenting and the available tools and support systems. She highlighted how positive parenting practices can help prevent or alleviate the long-term physical and emotional impacts of stressful childhood events. By normalizing the challenges of parenting, caregivers can access the necessary guidance to nurture thriving children.

Jessica Silverman, Executive Director of Cope, expressed gratitude to the Napa County Board of Supervisors and the California Assembly for their ongoing recognition of the importance of positive parenting. She underscored the crucial role parents play in creating a supportive environment for children in Napa Valley, especially amidst various contemporary challenges. Silverman reiterated the value of programs like Triple P in assisting families in navigating these complex issues, affirming Cope’s commitment to collaborating with community partners to offer essential support and resources to Napa Valley families.

The NCTP Collaborative comprises various agencies, including Cope Family Center, Up Valley Family Centers, Child Start, Inc., ParentsCAN, Napa County Public Health, Child Welfare Services, Self-Sufficiency, and Mental Health, Napa Valley Unified School District, Napa County Office of Education, NEWS, and Queen of the Valley Medical Center. The primary funding for these initiatives is sourced from the Napa Valley Vintners and the Napa County Health and Human Services Agency Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement Grant.
