Confronting Fear and Anxiety: Moms Addressing Children’s Climate Crisis Concerns

February 7, 2024

Climate change poses a significant concern for parents, as highlighted by a recent educational webinar featuring four prominent climate experts who are also mothers. The webinar, titled “Parenting in the Climate Crisis: Self Care, Connections, and Support,” involved Anya Kamenetz from the Climate Mental Health Network, Elizabeth Bechard and Liz Hurtado from Moms Clean Air Force and EcoMadres, and Jenni Silverstein from the Climate Psychology Alliance.

The experts emphasized the reality of climate anxiety, especially among young people, as evidenced by the 2021 Lancet Planetary Health study. This study surveyed 10,000 individuals aged 16–25 across ten countries, revealing widespread worry and emotional responses such as sadness, anxiety, anger, and guilt regarding climate change.

The panel discussion delved into various parental concerns related to climate change and its impact on children. Bechard mentioned how some parents view the challenges of climate change as opportunities for personal growth and hope, while also expressing worries about the long-term effects on children’s mental health.

Hurtado highlighted the disproportionate impact of climate change on communities of color, citing increased exposure to air pollution and extreme weather events. She emphasized the importance of addressing environmental injustices and promoting health equity.

The experts stressed the need for parents to navigate the delicate balance of honesty, comfort, and empowerment when discussing climate change with their children. They acknowledged the lack of a definitive guidebook for addressing these complex issues and the emotional burden it places on parents.

Silverstein discussed the concept of cognitive dissonance and the necessity of supporting parents in addressing climate-related threats. She emphasized the importance of community support and self-care practices to cope with climate-related stress.

In terms of taking action, the experts encouraged collective efforts such as recycling, composting, and engaging in environmental initiatives as a way to empower children and promote positive change. They underscored the healing power of collective action and the importance of finding like-minded individuals to work towards a sustainable future.

Overall, the experts emphasized the significance of acknowledging children’s emotions about climate change, engaging in climate action, and fostering a love for the natural world among younger generations. By promoting environmental stewardship and community engagement, parents can help children develop a sense of responsibility and connection to the planet.
