Smart Parenting Tip from Jonathan Scott: Transform Your Kids’ Rooms with This Genius Hack

March 5, 2024

Stuffed toys appear to multiply rapidly in my household, akin to the prolific nature of rabbits. Despite repeatedly instructing my children to refrain from acquiring more “lovies,” these plush companions continue to materialize. They overflow from beds, spill out of closets, and even lurk in the recesses of the car. The abundance of stuffed animals raises the question: why do they possess such an extensive collection, and why do they vehemently oppose any attempts to declutter? If you find yourself grappling with a similar stuffed animal invasion, turn to Jonathan Scott, a construction contractor, interior designer, and co-host of Property Brothers, for an ingenious solution.

Stuffed Animal Solution

Jonathan Silver Scott, who serves as a stepfather to Zooey Deschanel’s children Elsie, 8, and Charlie, 6, recently shared a practical video on Instagram showcasing his innovative concept. In the video, he addresses the common dilemma of dealing with an overwhelming number of stuffed animals in the house. Unlike the chaotic scenes in my residence, Scott’s solution involves suspending the stuffed animals in mini hammocks mounted on the walls in a designated corner of the room. He elaborates on the idea, stating, “I was trying to think of the best way to store all the extra stuffed animals. The ones that aren’t living on the kids’ beds.” By purchasing and installing three hammocks of varying sizes on wall studs, he effectively organizes the plush toys. Scott emphasizes that the children are aware they are not allowed to climb on the hammocks. He strategically positions less frequently used stuffed animals higher up, while those in regular demand are placed within easy reach.

“I like the aesthetic of it, and it gets everything off the floor,” Scott remarks, highlighting the dual benefits of tidiness and visual appeal. In his caption, the HGTV personality underscores the fun aspect of cleanup for kids facilitated by these hammocks, noting, “And the best part is you can see where everything is!”

Positive Reception

The response to Scott’s innovative storage solution has been overwhelmingly positive among parents. One individual humorously commented, “By the way, stuffies never leave! My daughter just turned 15 and still loves her stuffies and can remember all of their names! We have 2 large hammocks for the small ones and the large Squishmallows are on the bed. 😂” Another supporter expressed admiration, stating, “Jonathan, this is such a wonderful idea! This way you aren’t stepping on or tripping over them! 😂 LOL 🥰💕.”

Heartwarming Nickname

In a Father’s Day interview on his website, Scott shared a heartwarming anecdote about how Deschanel’s children affectionately refer to him. He recounted, “The little one, Charlie, doesn’t actually remember a time before me.” Scott explained the initial challenges of determining what the children would call him, considering they already had a father figure in Jacob Pechenik. After unsuccessful attempts to introduce alternative titles, the children settled on “My Jonathan.” Scott reflected on this endearing moniker, revealing, “So, whenever they tell a story they say, ‘There’s Daddy, there’s Mommy, and he’s my Jonathan.’” Such a sweet gesture indeed!
