Illuminating Disability Advocacy: Patti Vasquez’s Impact

March 6, 2024

No one can accuse Patti Vasquez of being a timid individual. Injustice, cruelty, and unkindness evoke strong reactions from this Chicago mother, who has centered her career around her two sons and a microphone. She utilizes her platform not only to provoke thought and laughter but also to advocate for Illinois families, especially those with members facing disabilities.

As a highly regarded comedian, she serves as the host of Driving it Home with Patti Vasquez on WCPT 820AM from 5-7 p.m. Monday to Friday. Additionally, she holds the positions of deputy policy advisor and health care and human services liaison for Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza. A dedicated activist for individuals with disabilities, she is the CEO and founder of With Kind Words, an organization dedicated to assisting healthcare professionals, legislators, educators, and others in improving communication with parents when delivering difficult news. This initiative is inspired by her journey of raising Declan, who was born with hypoplasia of the corpus callosum, a rare condition that doctors painted with a bleak outlook.

Beyond her comedic endeavors, Patti Vasquez is a member of the Badmomz of Comedy, showcasing her talent on stage. In her free time, she is penning a book to complement With Kind Words, chronicling her experiences navigating the complexities of motherhood with a child who has disabilities.

Reflecting on her career path, she states, “Whether addressing health issues, women’s rights, or storytelling in general, I feel like my entire career is a rebellion against someone, somewhere. You’ll hear my voice whether you embrace it or not.”

Patti attributes much of her success to her supportive husband, Steve, acknowledging the strains that can test relationships and finances when raising a child with special needs.

Recently, we had the privilege of discussing parenting with Patti.

What achievement are you most proud of among your various roles?

Patti responds, “Being a mom. I mean, I remember when my eldest son, Griffin, was born, my husband and I had an immediate realization. Suddenly, I couldn’t envision life without him,” she shares. Despite the challenges and occasional frustrations of parenting, she cherishes the journey and acknowledges moments of regret when emotions overwhelm her.

Balancing advocacy for Declan, 18, without neglecting Griffin, 20, has been a priority for Patti and her husband. Reflecting on her parenting journey, she expresses gratitude for raising one son on a full scholarship at the University of Chicago while navigating the uncertainties surrounding Declan’s health.

What valuable parenting lessons have you learned that you wish to impart to others?

Patti emphasizes the importance of mothers refraining from comparisons and being kinder to themselves in their parenting journey. She encourages self-affirmation, stating, “No matter how tough it gets, acknowledging ‘I’m doing a good job… I’m handling this situation,’ allows you to strive towards being the best mom you can be each day.”

What message do you have for mothers of children with disabilities?

“Breathe,” she advises. Patti acknowledges the stress and tension that can build up, urging mothers to release the pressure and remain present. She highlights the bureaucratic hurdles that complicate the lives of parents raising children with disabilities, emphasizing the added challenges they face unnecessarily.

Offering reassurance, she states, “It’s alright if your home is in disarray. You won’t achieve pristine cleanliness unless you have abundant resources. Embrace the chaos that comes with having therapy tools scattered around.”

Patti remains steadfast in her belief in Declan’s potential, focusing on his abilities rather than limitations.
