Combating Children’s Loneliness: Reducing Over-Scheduling Pressure

March 15, 2024

Loneliness, a prevalent issue in modern society, has been highlighted by Surgeon General Vivek Murthy in 2023 as an epidemic. The lack of social connections can significantly increase the risk of premature death by more than 60 percent. Surprisingly, young individuals, especially those in the 11- to 24-year-old range, are among the loneliest groups, despite assumptions that they would be the least affected.

The rise in loneliness among youth is not solely attributed to social media but is also a consequence of being excessively overscheduled. Today’s youth are inundated with academic pressures, extracurricular activities, and various commitments, leaving them with minimal free time for genuine social interactions. This reliance on digital media for connection further exacerbates feelings of isolation and contributes to escalating rates of depression, anxiety, and stress.

Parents, particularly in middle- and upper-class families, often hesitate to scale back their children’s schedules due to the competitive nature of college admissions and the belief that every advantage must be pursued. However, Dr. Gene Beresin emphasizes the importance of prioritizing work, love, and play, underscoring the necessity of fostering in-person relationships and social-emotional skills over relentless academic pursuits.

To address the challenge of encouraging social relationships, parents are advised to engage in ongoing conversations that demonstrate respect, empathy, and understanding, rather than resorting to formal family meetings that may be met with resistance from teenagers. By actively assessing and regulating their children’s online and offline activities, parents can better support their emotional well-being and mitigate the detrimental effects of excessive digital media usage.

The critical juncture between loneliness and hazardous loneliness is reached when a child’s academic performance, sleep, diet, or substance use is adversely affected. Parents are urged to listen attentively, validate their child’s experiences, and maintain a non-judgmental stance to facilitate open communication and support their emotional needs effectively.

In conclusion, loneliness is a multifaceted issue influenced by biological, psychological, and environmental factors. Without proactive measures to address this pervasive problem, the consequences could be profoundly damaging to individuals and society as a whole.
