PSYCHIATRIC VIEWS ON CONTEMPORARY EVENTS

Previously, I pondered the concept of requiring a license for individuals to assume the role of parents, drawing a comparison to the necessity of a driver’s license. However, the practical application of such a framework presented obstacles, and the potential repercussions and implications on the psychiatric field gave me pause in pursuing this idea further.

In the early 1970s, during my training, the realm of organized psychiatry frequently unjustly criticized mothers. This critique materialized in theories like the notion of “refrigerator moms” being blamed for autism due to emotional detachment and the idea of schizophrenogenic mothers instilling conflicting messages in their children. Meetings held by the APA during that period coincided with Mother’s Day, highlighting the emphasis on mothers while fathers received comparatively less attention.

Fast forward to the present era characterized by tragic incidents of mass shootings. In a recent incident, the father of a mass shooter in Highland Park, Illinois, admitted guilt to charges related to irresponsible behavior, having procured firearms for his son years prior to the tragic occurrence. Similarly, a mother in Michigan was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter following a mass shooting committed by her 15-year-old son. Warning signs were apparent before the incident, including a troubling drawing by the son, yet regrettably, the parents did not seek psychiatric assistance.

In stark contrast to these harrowing accounts is the narrative of “Mother Kelce,” who effectively raised two football prodigy sons without evident sibling rivalry issues. Her parenting methodology, spotlighted in a CNBC feature, underscored dedication, persistence, and unwavering support for her sons’ pursuits. This positive illustration highlights the importance of parental guidance and attentiveness in fostering children towards achievements.

These juxtaposed instances underscore the pivotal role of parental accountability in nurturing children’s growth and addressing potential obstacles. As our comprehension of mental health matters progresses, it is imperative to offer sufficient backing and resources to parents in navigating the intricacies of child-rearing.
