Conspiring Together: My Feline Friend and Toddler Partner in Chaos

February 17, 2024

Dear Care and Feeding,

Is there a child lock that can outsmart both my 1-and-a-half-year-old and our Maine Coon cat?

Our daughter is more active, but the cat seems to have a knack for opening locks, especially if there are treats involved. They have teamed up to wreak havoc on cabinets and even the gas stove dial. How long does this phase typically last? Are there additional measures I can take? We’ve experimented with different types of locks like squeeze ones, magnet ones, and push-dial ones. Should I consider providing enrichment puzzles for our child? (I’ve already started offering them to the cat, who seems to enjoy them.)

—Every Door is Open

Dear Every Door,

Utilize baby gates to restrict your daughter’s access to the kitchen and ensure that bathroom doors are kept closed. Store any potentially hazardous items out of her reach.

While there may not be an entirely foolproof lock solution, I can relate to your struggles from my own experience with my daughter during her toddler years. Despite my efforts to secure locks, she managed to outsmart them. It’s a constant challenge to stay one step ahead of curious little ones.

Remaining vigilant is key in such situations. Unfortunately, I can’t offer a solution for preventing your cat from meddling with the gas stove, as even a baby gate may not deter its exploration. Have you explored all options for childproofing the stove dials? This phase of exploration and mischief will eventually pass for your daughter, but it may persist for your feline companion. Focus on safeguarding your child from potential dangers and keep a watchful eye on her when she’s up and about.

More Advice From Slate

About a year and a half ago, my husband, daughter “Chloe,” and I relocated to a new state. Our current residence is situated in a predominantly White suburb surrounded by a diverse, non-White city. Although our initial preference was to live in the city, concerns about safety prompted us to choose a different neighborhood. Consequently, all our neighbors are White, and there are eight other children around Chloe’s age (7) in the vicinity. Initially, Chloe was actively engaging with these children, visiting their homes and inviting them over to play.
