Navigating the Digital Parenting Journey

March 5, 2024

VU-academics regularly blog each month focusing on enhancing societal interconnectedness.

A photograph on my father-in-law’s Facebook profile captures a poignant moment: my body draped in a paper gown, my son Luca in only a diaper and a knitted hat, and my partner’s beaming face. This image marks the beginning of our family’s journey, just before Luca needed medical attention. The emotions it evoked were overwhelming, with tears flowing for weeks. Despite the initial difficulty, we eventually overcame the challenges. I recall sharing this moment with my family through WhatsApp, too drained to type or speak coherently.

Reflecting on this experience, I was taken aback by my emotional response upon discovering that the same picture was garnering attention on a different Facebook profile. It made me question the nature of our online interactions and the implications of sharing personal moments in a digital landscape. The interconnectedness we seek through social media often blurs the lines between personal and interpersonal content. We tag friends in tweets, showcase family and pets on Instagram, and inadvertently reveal glimpses of our lives in TikTok videos. But how intentional are these choices, and to what extent do we consider the consequences?

Despite concerns about privacy and data security, the allure of connection and communal support often outweighs the perceived risks. Seeking advice, validation, and shared experiences, I found myself scrolling through online forums in the wee hours, seeking solace and guidance from virtual communities. As a researcher in digital privacy, I am acutely aware of the pitfalls of oversharing online. Yet, the human need for connection and belonging propels us to seek reassurance and camaraderie in the digital realm.

The dilemma of sharing personal images of loved ones online, especially children who cannot consent, weighs heavily on my mind. However, amidst the apprehension, I acknowledge the genuine human connections fostered through shared experiences. Revisiting that poignant photograph on my father-in-law’s profile, I now focus on the sense of unity and support it engendered across virtual boundaries. It serves as a reminder of the bonds forged in moments of vulnerability, transcending physical distance and differences. And in those moments, I find solace and a reason to smile.
