During the recent SXSW Conference, Meghan Markle participated in a panel discussion on International Women’s Day, where she shared her perspectives on motherhood and the hurdles presented by social media. The panel, titled ‘Breaking Barriers, Shaping Narratives: How Women Lead On and Off the Screen,’ included prominent figures like Katie Couric, Brooke Shields, and Nancy Wang Yuen, alongside the Duchess of Sussex.
Meghan candidly discussed the challenges she encountered as a new mother, highlighting the cyberbullying and mistreatment she faced online, including from the royal family.
Meghan revealed, “The majority of the bullying and abuse I faced on social media was during my pregnancies with Archie and Lili, and when they were newborns.”
She further emphasized the impact of social media on new mothers, citing the pressure they feel to live up to unrealistic standards of motherhood portrayed online. She stated, “The portrayal of motherhood as perfect on social media can be overwhelming for new mothers who know that reality is far from perfect. We all know that it’s messy.”

The discussion, moderated by Errin Haines of The Amendment podcast, also underscored the vital role Prince Harry played in supporting Meghan. Meghan expressed her appreciation for her husband’s active involvement in parenting and his constant backing.
Acknowledging Prince Harry’s support, Meghan remarked, “My husband is deeply engaged as a father and a pillar of support for me and our family. I truly value that. It’s a significant blessing.”
She added, “Not everyone has the same level of support. Hence, it’s crucial for us to establish protective measures so that women, especially mothers, do not feel more vulnerable when navigating the online space.”
