Effective Parenting Tips from Dr. Randy Cale: ‘Twas the Christmas Eve

EDITOR’S NOTE: The subsequent content is a reproduction of Dr. Randy Cale’s column submitted for Christmas in 2022.

On the eve of Christmas, throughout the dwelling

Not a creature stirred, not even a mouse, foretelling.

Seated comfortably on the sofa, Mom and Dad

With all the gifts finally placed under the tree they had.

Both engrossed in their phones, checking with care

For any surprises from Santa’s list to bear.

The tree brimming, displaying abundance galore

With credit stretched to include all the ‘extras’ in store!

Convinced that all was set and nothing to amend

They both sighed, “Wasn’t this fun?” with a sarcastic blend.

‘What does Christmas truly entail?’ they pondered in dismay

Seemingly trapped in a cycle of stress and dismay.

Awaiting the New Year for a moment of respite

Yearning for a change, a shift in insight.

Contemplating amidst a tearful embrace

Wishing silently for more magic to grace.

Concealing their deepest apprehensions and fears

Doubting the essence of all the festive cheers.

As they gazed into the night, pondering their choices

Seeking solace amidst their inner voices.

Then, in a moment of epiphany and delight

Mom proposed a transformative shift that night.

‘What if, in this very moment, we redefine

From material presents to a presence divine?

Showering love and warmth upon all in our sight

Embracing the true essence of this night.’

‘What do you mean?’ inquired Dad, skepticism in tow

With a hint of reluctance, his doubts began to show.

Undeterred by his skepticism and cynical facade

Mom continued, with a heart so warm and broad.

Envisioning a Christmas of a different hue

Embracing a spirit of love and virtue.

Rushing through the day, filling it to the brim

Leaving them to question, ‘Is it all just a whim?’

Proposing a shift in their magical intention

To master their attention, a conscious intervention.

Choosing to focus on love, beauty, and grace

Leading their lives with these values in place.

No longer seeking joy in compromise or despair

But in the beauty that surrounds them everywhere.

Their power lies not in the external facade

But in their ability to rise above the negative charade.

Choosing to cherish the sweet moments they find

Focusing on love and leaving fear behind.

Children not in need of gadgets or toys that clatter

But of parents present, in moments that matter.

Embracing love and kindness as their guiding light

Living the true essence of Christmas, day and night.

Being the embodiment of joy and love

Teaching their children the true essence thereof.

Realizing that the essence lies not in the end

But in the gift of love they forever extend.

Declaring with conviction and a silent dare

To commit to caring, to show they truly care.

Their children will notice, their hearts will feel light

As they embrace Christmas in its truest right.

‘Merry Christmas, My Love,’ Mom softly spoke

‘Let’s sit here, hand in hand, in this gentle yoke.’

Drifting off to sleep as the night grew deep

Dreaming sweet dreams, like children, in peaceful sleep.

Merry Christmas!
