Katherine Ryan’s Unconventional Potty Training Method Sparks Debate Among Parents

Katherine Ryan, the well-known comedian, has stirred up a discussion among parents with her unique approach to potty training. Despite the divided opinions, she stands firm in her belief that her method has been successful with all three of her children.

Typically, parents are advised to observe signs indicating readiness for potty training in their children, such as attempts to hide or express discomfort with wet diapers. This readiness phase commonly occurs between 18 to 24 months of age. Nevertheless, each child progresses at their own pace, and even if a child is still struggling with daytime dryness at the age of 4, schools cannot enforce full toilet training before enrollment.

Katherine Ryan, who is a mother to Violet, 14, from a previous relationship, as well as Fred, two, and Fenna Grace, one, with her current husband Bobby Kootstra, has taken a rather unconventional stance on potty training. She admitted to introducing her children to the potty “pretty much from the moment they’re born,” a revelation she shared on her podcast, Telling Everybody Everything, in an episode titled ‘Potty Trained By Age 1’. Additionally, she posted a clip on Instagram explaining her approach, proudly stating that all her children were out of diapers by their first birthdays.

Explaining her method further, Katherine emphasized that she starts placing her children on the potty randomly throughout the day once they are old enough to engage with stories and books. She highlighted that this practice is common in many parts of the world, except in Western culture, where babies are typically trained to use diapers.

By initiating potty training at an early age, Katherine aims to bypass the phase where children in Western societies are accustomed to using diapers. She believes that by avoiding this reliance on diapers, the transition to solid foods and the subsequent change in bowel movements become more manageable for both the child and the parent.

Despite the success Katherine has experienced with her children, some of her followers expressed skepticism. While some praised her approach, others cautioned that every child is different and that parents should find methods that suit their individual circumstances.

In the realm of celebrity parenting, other notable figures like Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester and Chris Hemsworth have also shared their parenting concerns and experiences. Victoria Beckham has offered insights into her and David Beckham’s parenting principles as well.
