Resources and Support for Single Parents: Join the Alliance

January 22, 2024

Living in Europe may seem like a dream, but the reality for single parent families relocating overseas can be quite challenging, especially when faced with unfamiliar surroundings while caring for their children. In response to these difficulties, a recent initiative in the Benelux region known as the Single Parent Alliance has emerged to provide a supportive community and valuable resources for these families.

The initiative, spearheaded by Lt. Col. Holly Archer, Deputy Commander for Nursing at the SHAPE Healthcare Facility in Belgium, was born out of a recognition of the struggles faced by single parents within the military community. Archer, alongside Brooke Campbell and Chaplain Capt. Gerald Igboanusi, recognized the need to create a space where single parents could find understanding, support, and practical assistance.

The Single Parent Alliance aims to bridge the gap by offering a platform for single parents to connect, share experiences, and access resources tailored to their unique needs. By hosting meetings during the workday, the initiative addresses the common challenge of childcare availability, ensuring that single parents can participate without added stress.

The Alliance’s focus extends beyond just providing a support network; it also offers educational sessions on parenting techniques, time management, and self-care. By fostering a sense of community and sharing practical contacts for household assistance, the initiative seeks to alleviate some of the burdens faced by single parents juggling multiple responsibilities.

Recognizing the importance of personal development and resilience, the Alliance is planning specialized training weekends for single parents, complete with childcare services to enable parents to fully engage in the sessions. By creating opportunities for connection and growth, the initiative aims to empower single parents to navigate the complexities of balancing work, family, and personal well-being.

Ultimately, the goal of the Single Parent Alliance is to promote healthier relationships, resilience, and a sense of wholeness among single parents within the military community. By offering a supportive environment and practical resources, the initiative not only benefits individual parents but also contributes to a more engaged and effective workforce.

For those interested in joining the Single Parent Alliance, the next meeting will be held at the SHAPE International Library on Feb. 16 at 2 p.m. For more information, inquiries can be directed to USAG Benelux Army Community Services via email.
