Parenting Philosophy Shared by Drew Barrymore and Andie MacDowell

Drew Barrymore, known for her early success as a child actor, is determined to steer her own children away from the spotlight. During a recent conversation with actress Andie MacDowell on The Drew Barrymore Show, Barrymore shared an interesting revelation. She disclosed that her 9-year-old daughter Frankie expressed her desire to pursue acting in the future.

Barrymore reassured her daughter, stating, “I will support you and assist you in any way I can. However, it’s essential for them to enjoy their childhood and grow up before delving into such pursuits.”

In a surprising turn of events, Andie MacDowell, the renowned Groundhog Day star, echoed Barrymore’s sentiments. MacDowell, who has daughters Margaret, 29, and Rainey, 34, as well as son Justin, 38, with ex-husband Paul Qualley, shared that her daughters followed in her footsteps but only embarked on acting later in life.

Reflecting on this, Barrymore, who also co-parents Olive, 11, with ex-husband Will Kopelman, expressed, “So, I’m on the right track.” MacDowell affirmed her stance, reminiscing about a childhood encounter with Barrymore.

Recalling their first meeting, MacDowell nostalgically shared, “I remember the first time I saw you… You came to a party when you were just a child. It was at the St. Elmo’s Fire gathering.”

The conversation led to a realization that while MacDowell was in her mid-twenties at the time, Barrymore was merely 10 years old. This amusing anecdote sparked memories of Barrymore’s early interactions at social events, including a dance with actor Emilio Estevez at Rob Lowe’s birthday bash.

Transitioning to a discussion about parenting, MacDowell emphasized the importance of allowing children to experience a normal upbringing devoid of undue pressures. Barrymore found solace in MacDowell’s perspective, feeling validated in her own parenting choices.

Shifting focus to the next generation, MacDowell, who recently became a grandmother to Justin’s daughter, highlighted the profound connection she shares with her granddaughter. Expressing her joy, MacDowell mentioned the deliberation over what she would be called by her granddaughter, emphasizing her aversion to traditional titles like “Granny.”

As the conversation wrapped up, the hosts delved into the challenges faced by celebrities in safeguarding their families’ privacy from intrusive paparazzi.
